Majlis Gagasan Malaysia’s Chairman and “WE ARE MALAYSIANS” Movement Co-Coordinator, Manivannan Rethinam welcomes and supports Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s assurance and the call on behalf of the government urging the Police, Attorney General Chamber and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to take firm action against any individuals, who use the social media to condemn religion or spread seditious statements, regardless of race and religion. As quoted in the media, DPM stated “it should be enforced, regardless of race, and if the Malays are in the wrong, we will take action. Likewise for the other races, then it is fair”.

He added thus we call upon IGP, AG and MCMC to take immediate  action using existing laws on whoever condemns or insults another religion without fear or favour for irresponsible, inflammatory, incendiary and seditious spewing and incitement of racial and religious hatred and conflict that could lead to aggression among multiracial and multi religious, peace loving Malaysians. In the interest of National Unity, we also welcome and support the government’s willingness to amend the Sedition Act in the event the existing laws are inadequate, in order to curb social media users insensitive online posting to ensure the Police, Attorney General’s Chamber and MCMC takes the appropriate action without any excuses due to legal provisions.

Racial and other forms of polarisation are the biggest hindrance to national unity and it should be the responsibility of all Malaysians to reject racial polarisation in whatever form that is detrimental to national unity. The 85% “silent” majority do not want to see religion or faith being used as a tool to attack or divide Malaysians which ravages the nation of its moral and intellectual resources.

We can be sure should the race and religious tension deepens, it will bring an adverse effect to our economic front and derailing our Malaysian vision 2020 to be a developed Nation. It is the responsibility of all Malaysians to take a firm stand against divisive forces that can tear apart our social fabric and cause disunity. We must reject the racial and religious extremists who incite racial and religious hatred, and stand together to rise above politics and unite as Malaysians in working towards building our multi-racial nation into a united Malaysian.
